The time has finally arrived - graduation day. The day that Quebec Company will be released onto the outside world. This is what we were so focused on in the beginning, yet as time went on we realized that we may never experience anything like this again and we began to make the most of our time here. Any thoughts that we had that Week 8 would be easy and that we could just breeze by until graduation were quickly corrected. We had a flashback to indoctrination weekend on Monday on the longest day that we have had so far in training, mainly due to the Guardian Challenge. Despite the pain and exhaustion, by the end of the week we were glad that we were pushed and challenged right up until the very end of training.

As happy as we are to be reunited with our families and start our careers, each of us will miss waking up with our shipmates, even if it is to the sound of "Fire, Fire, Fire!" We have been very fortunate with our shipmates and our Company Commanders. When our recruiters told us that our Company Commanders would be among the most important influences in our lives, we were skeptical. It turned out to be true and the reason that we will be standing on that parade filed on Friday is because of their dedication. BM1 Vedder and BM2 Crews were with us every step of the way, jogging and cycling alongside us to ensure that we could graduate. As for our shipmates, although we had our share of drama and tension, we have never stopped looking out for each other. When we walk off the base, looking forward to some well deserved leave, we know that we will always be proud to be a part of Quebec 181.

Zulu Company 180

Week 03

26 JAN-31 JAN 2009

Monday

This morning we made our decision whether or not to sign up for the GI Montgomery Bill. We also took classes on sexual harassment, rape, and sexual assault prevention. We also earned some incentive training because we were not motivated enough to move quickly.

Tuesday

Our squad bays were destroyed because we did not keep them up to the stellar standard of cleanliness. We also learned about the history of the Coast Guard, its many traditions and heroes.

Wednesday

Today was an embarrassing day for Zulu 180. During our physical fitness weight training we were shown up by Alpha 181 who sounded off louder than we did.

Thursday

We made a tremendous attempt at a turn around. We sounded off as loud as we could during our lifecycle workout, studied hard in our classes, and excelled rapidly with our manual of arms.

Friday

Today marked our first classes in seamanship. We learned about types of line including marlin and manila. Our high was vaporized when our section commander informed us that one of our own attempted to quit. This greatly affected the sense of teamwork we have tried to build and earned our shipmate an extra week of training.

Saturday

We spent a major portion of the day in seamanship learning knots including the bowline and the clove hitch. We also learned the proper way to stand lookout and practiced manning the helm on a simulator.

Week Summary

This week was full of highs and lows for Zulu 180. Our company commanders are setting the bar higher every day. If we meet our objectives we can carry on with more practical tasks, such as maintaining our uniforms. If we fail we have to pay the consequences. Many recruits are getting inquisitive and are asking specific questions about their future roles in the fleet. In addition the senior company in our building, Victor 180, graduated this week. Many of us felt a blend of homesickness and excitement. In 05 weeks that will be us. However as a company we still need to worry about the small stuff in front of us. We are all changing little by little, from the civilians we once were into outstanding members of the Coast Guard.

 Bravo 181 Forming week

It has been a long hard week, but Bravo Company has made it through its first week of training. We have come from all over the map from Hawaii to Alaska, California to, New York. We are all different, but from the moment we entered Cape May, we became one whole unit. While it will take us awhile to become a unified team we have already started to foster a teamwork spirit starting at Sexton Hall. There we got off the buses, all nervous but excited. During the first few days we went through basic paper work, uniform distribution and medical. I think it is safe to say we have to thank the Cape May medical staff for making sure we never catch anything with all the shots and pokes and prods they gave us. They did warn more is to follow. After processing, we were given over to our company commanders, the people who will try to teach us all we need to know about Coast Guard live. With all the experience between them, we feel a deep sense of pride for being taught by such dedicated and inspiring people. During the weekend, they started what will be a 08 week lesson that will (hopefully) culminate in a graduation into such a noble service. That is the focus and goal that keeps us motivated through the trials that we faced during the weekend. We are the largest company on the regiment, but we feel like we can become the closest group after this weekend. We can only look forward for what is to come, and face it together. We may be tired, sore, and just a little overwhelmed, but we are dedicated to our team goal.

Recruit Company Victor 180 will be marching in the 56th Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 20, 2009 and are completing their final inspections before they depart on Thursday Jan. 15, 2009.

"Participating in the Presidential Inauguration is an enormous opportunity for Recruit Company Victor 180. This time honored military tradition will give them an experience they will treasure for many years," said Cmdr. Michael Senecal, the Executive Officer for Coast Guard Training Center Cape May.

Providing military ceremonial support to the inauguration dates back 220 years. When George Washington began his inaugural journey from Mount Vernon, Va. to New York City, local militias joined his inaugural procession as it passed through towns along the way. Once Washington arrived in New York City, a presidential escort composed of members of the U.S. Army, local militia units and Revolutionary War veterans accompanied him to Federal Hall for the presidential oath. The military has continued this tradition of inaugural support ever since.

Several hundred Armed Forces personnel are preparing to provide ceremonial support to the 56th Presidential Inaugural during the 10-day inaugural period in January 2009. This support is traditionally comprised of musical units, marching bands, color guards, salute batteries and honor cordons, which render appropriate ceremonial honors to the Commander-in-Chief. Historically, as many as 5,000 service members have participated in the celebration on Inauguration Day.

Media Note: Please contact Chief Warrant Officer Veronica Bandrowsky at (609) 898-6362 if you are interested in attending the personnel inspection Tuesday at 3 p.m.
